Adults Buying Toys Are Driving Industry Growth. Here’s Why That Matters for Claw Arcades.

New industry data points to a broader audience for prize-based entertainment than many people assume.
Ask someone to picture the typical claw arcade customer, and they will probably describe a child tugging a parent toward the machines. That picture isn’t wrong, but it leaves out a lot of people.
A favorite character. A Pokémon card. The next piece in a collection. These interests don’t disappear at 18. In fact, adults buying toys are now helping drive the industry’s growth, and that offers a useful perspective on who a claw arcade can attract.
What the Data Shows About Adults Buying Toys
The U.S. toy industry posted its strongest first half in six years in 2026, with dollar sales up 7%, according to Circana’s midyear data. Beneath that headline is a shift in who the products are reaching.
Toy sales for adults 18 and older grew 25%, making adults the largest contributor to industry growth. Teens ages 12 to 17 were the fastest-growing recipient group, up 33%. Together, teens and adults generated nearly 60% of the industry’s incremental dollar gains. Adult-only households accounted for 55% of total toy sales. The industry has a name for this group: kidults.
The categories behind that growth matter as well. Trading cards and collectibles helped fuel the gains. Licensed toys, which include products tied to recognizable characters, franchises, and teams, rose 24% and accounted for 39% of the market. Sports properties were another prominent theme.
These findings point to toys playing a broader role as hobbies, collectibles, and shared interests for teens and adults.
Where Claw Arcades Fit
The prize selection at a claw arcade overlaps with many of these interests: plush characters, trading cards, figurines, and collectibles. That creates opportunities to appeal to guests across age groups.
We see this broader audience in our stores every day. Families are an important part of the experience, and adults also play, collect, and look for prizes that reflect their own interests.
For anyone evaluating a claw arcade franchise, that widens the picture of the potential customer. Teens, collectors, and casual players may each find a different reason to stop at the same store.
Keeping the Prize Mix Relevant
One practical advantage of a claw arcade is that its main attraction can be refreshed without a remodel. What’s inside the machines can change with the seasons, new releases, and local interests. Our Easton Town Center location in Columbus, for example, opened with Pokémon cards and Ohio State merchandise alongside plush and figurines.
Keeping that mix relevant takes ongoing attention to what guests ask for and which items are moving. That is why prize strategy is a core part of how Fantasy Claw Arcade trains owners and managers.
A Broader View of the Business
Claw arcades are often thought of as a kids’ attraction. The toy industry data, together with what we see in our stores, suggests that view leaves out an important part of the audience.
Collectors, character fans, and adults playing for themselves all belong in the picture. Understanding their interests gives operators more ways to make the experience appealing and keep the prize selection fresh.
For prospective owners, that is worth considering alongside location, operations, and the other factors that shape a business. The enjoyment of playing brings guests to the machines. Prizes they actually want help make the experience relevant to them, whatever their age.
